It’s been a year since the end of the war. It’s been a year, and negotiations for peace are still being handled. Fire Lord Zuko has a lot on his plate, and there is a whisper of discontent in the air.

Amid the peace that has been hard-won, a council has been created featuring members of each of the Nations, as well as the Avatar. The goal of this National Council is simple - to prevent an atrocity like Sozin’s War from ever happening again.

Resurgence is a sandbox Avatar: The Last Airbender / The Legend of Aang role-play set one year after the end of the Hundred Year War. We accept both canons and original characters, and take the story in any direction we'd like, exploring the semantics and problems of a war-torn world rebuilding. We are rated PG-13 with optional mature content.

The whispers still came and went. Mostly, though, she tried to focus on good memories, on good feelings, because somehow it made the voices less loud and the visions less real. It took time for her to figure that out, but now she was getting good at it. The voices and the visions were just her head trying to make sense of her disjointed reality, but in time, the disjointed reality she was in now was coming back together, little piece by little piece, and maybe it was fine if it took some time.

She wondered, a little, if she could learn to understand the bird skeletons the same way she was trying to learn to understand the dragon in her heart. They weren't really birds, they looked more like lemur skeletons with weird beaks instead of faces. Azula had no idea where those came from, but here they were. Maybe it didn't matter where they'd come from.

As often she did anymore, she had come outside, to sit in the sunlight and sketch. Today she was trying to draw the turtle-ducklings. The babies moved around a lot, and they were difficult to get right, because they were always moving, but the particular way their feathers moved when they ruffled them was fascinating enough to want to draw. She could only draw such things if she saw them move, right?

There was a bird skeleton not far from the ducks, floating in the water. Azula was ignoring it. After a while, though, her leg started jittering incessantly, and no matter how much she wanted it to stop, once she got jittering, that was that. She sighed in annoyance, setting her sketchpad and pencil down. Maybe she'd go for a walk. Burning off excess energy was especially important for her, because she didn't firebend anymore, and the energy got pinned up in there.

Azula stood up, and wandered away from her place, her hands clasping together behind her back as she went. She was ignoring the odd sounds and the blurry things she caught sight of out of the corner of her eye. And she was going to keep doing that until it all went away, and everything was okay again.

Takeshi had been sparring with some of the guards earlier, and it was a great way to burn off energy, but eventually, that too had come to an end, and for the moment, he was alone in this part of the gardens. Usually, Takeshi was careful, he didn't wander in too deeply because it seemed to be the respite of the royal family, and the last thing the earthbender really wanted to do was interrupt.

But this section was lovely and he didn't think he'd wandered all that far into it yet. For the moment his gaze was focused on some of the plants, trying to see how many of them he could identify. It was a bit of an intriguing game, and it was good practice.

It wouldn't hold his attention for long, but, maybe, for long enough and that was all that mattered.

Eventually, though there was movement, and it caught his attention. Takeshi found himself looking at princess Azula. There was an instant bow, of course, a rather deep one, and he was slow to straighten from it as he was not sure if she was just wandering or if he truly had wandered further into this part of the garden than he meant to.

"I apologize if I disturbed you." He murmured after a moment or two, figuring it was better to say it and not necessarily have needed to than to manage to offend her.

Takeshi had heard many things about the princess, and he wasn't really sure which ones should be believed. It seemed unwise to test his luck without knowing for sure what he was dealing with. But Zuko wouldn't have let her stay in the palace if she was truly dangerous Takeshi didn't think. Or, perhaps he misjudged the Fire Lord - it was hard to say.

"I was exploring the gardens and might have wandered a little further than I realized." It was an explanation, but not an excuse and Takeshi knew it. But he thought probably it wouldn't be so bad.

That was a person. And the person was talking to her. What. Nobody really talked to her. She had no idea how to do this socialising thing. Even socialising with her mother and Zuko was hard enough. Zuko said he was jealous of her because she had friends, and he'd never figured out the socialising thing, but the truth was, hell, neither had she. Mai had been pushed into becoming her friend, and Ty Lee... well, that one she'd never figured out. Maybe something similar, maybe not. Either way, Azula probably never did have friends, it just looked like it.

And, of course, she still had no idea how to handle interacting with normal people. This led to a lot of staring on her part. Wasn't that rude? Um. "It's. I was just... wandering a little," was what she said. He had really pretty eyes. That was an interesting colour. She'd only seen anything like it once, and that was on the prefect of the royal guard whose name she could never seem to remember, ugh. Well, she'd just conveniently fail to inform him of how rarely she could recall his name.

Her artistic ventures were even his fault and she still kept forgetting his name. Didn't that make him kind of her sifu sort of? Not really but she could pretend...?

"Um. ... if, you want, I wouldn't mind showing you around," she said, unsure. Was that right? It sounded polite enough... how did this work ah. "I just needed to get up and move, doesn't matter which way I move." The point was moving, yes. And maybe showing off the gardens to someone else would help her remember how much she used to love the gardens when she was younger. It just wasn't very becoming of someone that lived in his shadow to love such useless things as gardens. The butterflies seemed to have returned, as well, so the gardens were probably an interesting sight.

Well, that didn't exactly mean it was okay, but possibly he wasn't as far in as he thought, and maybe Takeshi hadn't quite been intruding after all. He hoped not, he didn't want to be in anyone's way or cause any issues. He was just... exploring, and enjoying the grounds because they were lovely.

"That sounds nice." Takeshi said it carefully, "If it really isn't out of your way or anything. But you certainly don't have to." Which, of course, she didn't, she was the princess but he still felt the need to say it because he was the one who was probably out of line, after all.

He nodded slightly. "I can understand that." Sometimes movement was necessary, and often it helped clear the mind. Somehow Takeshi imagined firebenders had it far worse. ... Certainly, Yori seemed to, but Yori also had - well. To be fair, every firebender he'd ever met had a temper a mile wide somewhere. It just ... seemed to hide, sometimes very deep in there.

"I'm Takeshi by the way." He mentioned, offering another shallow bow to her out of respect. Names were good, and he was relatively sure they hadn't directly met yet. ... He'd not really had much of a chance to rub elbows with the royal family, and that was probably for the best. ... But maybe Takeshi should try to get used to it, since it seemed they would be hanging around the palace, at least for a little while.

Then again, maybe not. Mom had tentatively mentioned visiting some other parts of the Fire Nation to see how things were going.

Ah. No, not out of her way. Actually, she was just wandering around, so it wasn't a big deal, certainly. It was something to do, too, besides wander around and try too hard to block out the whispers in her head. She was going to end up trying to be more social, probably, because talking with someone made it easier to ignore the whispering. And so far, so good, apparently. Maybe she wasn't that bad at the whole socialising thing as she'd thought.

Takeshi... now with any luck she'd remember that tomorrow. "Azu - ... you... probably know that... right." Azula shuffled her feet a little, looking a bit embarrassed. "Uh, I'm not good at names, I might forget yours by the time we come across each other again. I keep forgetting the royal guard leader guy's name, too, and we talk all the time." Well, not exactly all the time, just a lot of it.

Anyway, she turned a little and nodded for him to follow. The hanging flowers were always a nice thing to see, so she was going to go there first. The colours were beautiful, if nothing else, and maybe they'd find some butterflies. "Most of the time the garden's just where I come to draw," she said. "Long as you don't disturb the wildlife or anything, I don't think Zuzu would mind if you come wander around in it more."

That was probably okay... actually, Azula thought it might be nice to recreate the royal gardens somewhere in the city, so the people can enjoy them without having to come into the palace. Visitors were nice, but they were also somewhat dangerous, Azula knew that.

Takeshi smiled slightly. "I did know that, but there's nothing wrong with it." It was.. you know, polite to introduce oneself normally. Azula just typically didn't need to, she was the princess, after all, and most people knew her quite well. Or at least, they knew of her.

"It's okay if you do. I'm not really important and I don't mind much anyway." Nah, he'd survive if she didn't know his name. "... I think his name is Zian. Not that it matters." Takeshi only knew because his mom seemed to be eyeing the guy and well okay then. It was cute, as long as he didn't turn out to be an asshole like the last boyfriend. Takeshi may have to shove his foot up some firebender's ass if that happened again.

Takeshi followed Azula easily, curious about what she was going to show him. "I bet they have a lot of things you can draw if you want to." Which was probably why it was what she chose to do. ... It seemed kind of peaceful, being able to come here and just try to capture a snapshot of all this on paper. "I'll, ah, keep that in mind."

Zuzu must have been a nickname for the Fire Lord. It was cute. ... Takeshi thought he would avoid using it on potential pain of execution. But still. She was his sister and the nickname was cute. "May take you up on it occasionally, I've liked what I've been able to see so far."

Wasn't it kind of weird? It wasn't as if Azula had been raised as anything but a princess, and knew what her position as one meant. It was just... nowadays, she just wanted to be a normal teenager. Maybe that was strange after the life she's lead. It wasn't like she'd really know. Nobody had a guide for this craziness she was living.

"It's kind of impolite, isn't it?" she asked, tilting her head a little. And she was genuinely curious. "To assume you know who I am?" It wasn't like she knew how this socialisation thing worked, so perhaps asking wouldn't be so bad. But then, no one but Zuko and their mother had ever been terribly tolerant of her weird questions. As a very young girl, she vaguely recalled asking them. She'd eventually stopped, but she didn't remember why anymore.

Right, Zian, yes. That was his name. Now if she could recall that in a few hours, she'd certainly be in business. She'd remember it eventually. Probably, she needed to use it more. It'd stick a bit easier if she used it more, that was for sure, but mostly she avoided saying his name, because she'd forgotten it after the first time he'd said it, and then it was embarrassing to admit she'd forgotten it.

"They do," she answered, nodding. "We also have a family of turtle-ducks that like the pond. I was trying to draw the babies learning to go underwater before I got jittery." It seemed to be, unsurprisingly, when she got to sitting too still for too long, that she needed to get up and move. That was interesting.

She wouldn't say it, but having someone to talk to that wasn't really busy would be a nice thing.

Mm. Well, on the one hand, yes, but on the other hand in the palace of all places... "Well," Takeshi began after a moment, "Some might see it that way, yes. Because it could be seen as a bit... presumptuous, but on the other hand here in the palace, it seems rather likely that most would know who you are." He shrugged slightly. "I guess you can't go wrong introducing yourself though." Probaly not? Did mean if there was a guest who genuinely didn't know, they wouldn't be mistaken or confused when they didn't know what to call her.

"Turtle-ducks are adorable." And there were apparently some in one of the ponds so that was cute and good to know. Maybe he'd see them at some point if he was allowed to wonder.

"I get like that sometimes." Takeshi admitted mildly. "Just, start feeling like I have to move and all my focus goes away until I do that." The good news was that when he got like that he could typically spar with someone or just start exploring. ... That was, after all, what had started this conversation in the first place.

At least the princess really didn't seem to mind his presence. It was nice not to accidentally be imposing. Not that he thought she would have said it was okay if it wasn't really, but it was still impolite to assume. Something here about it making a jerk of both parties. ... Anyway.

"Do you enjoy drawing?" Takeshi hadn't really ever tried himself, but it seemed like a reasonably safe thing to ask about.

The weird ways socialising worked were still a bit of a mystery to her, and maybe they always would be. Before, she'd simply not cared about those weird ways, and did whatever it was that served whatever ultimate goal she had, but now, she had none of those to focus on. It was almost difficult for her to deal with in and of itself. Azula always had an ultimate goal she was working towards. The only one that seemed remotely right seemed to be the apparent focus on her getting better, but that wasn't an acceptable thing to have as a goal.

It just wasn't.

Oh. Well, maybe her need to occasionally get up and move wasn't that weird then. Maybe he had Fire Nation blood. That made the most sense, though he didn't look terribly like a Fire National. Then again, she'd only ever seen his eye colour in the Fire Nation. Or, the Avatar's eyes were a darker shade of the same colour, right? Hmm, she'd forgotten now. It just seemed Fire Nationals were more restless. That was how they got themselves into so much trouble, huh?

It made the most sense. They were restless and passionate and tended to dive headlong into things, and it was... admirable, maybe, that they never seemed to be afraid of much, but at the same time, so troublesome. It was so, so troublesome, and really, Azula had to feel sorry for the nation's mothers. Boy they didn't sign up for that, but got it anyway.

At that, Azula blinked, and then shrugged. "I... guess?" she answered. "I've just recently bothered trying to draw, honestly, and I don't really know what enjoying something feels like, but I don't hate it? I also keep doing it. But that might be more because I find it weirdly calming." That was most likely, she thought. "Ah, found them," she said, just as they turned a corner. The pathway led through a series of trellises, threaded through which were bunches of vine with clusters of pale pink flowers that dangled off the wood. Azula moved a little quicker to get over to them, reaching up and admiring the petals.

"I forgot what these are called, but this is my favourite part of the gardens." Someday, maybe she'd remember what the flowers were called, or she'd ask her mother. One of the two.

Azula didn't seem to have the finest grasp of socializing in general. It was almost sad - but he supposed being at the top did make it difficult to make normal friends at times, because of course, no one would tell her how to do that. And if no one was telling her how, and she didn't have anyone to learn from by example, then all she had was what she could figure out instinctively.

There were plenty of rumors about how dangerous the princess had once been, but Takeshi found he wasn't particularly concerned. Perhaps it was his closeness to Entei again, making it difficult for him to process the aura of danger that was probably involved in a situation like this. But truly, Azula seemed nice enough through this exchange.

Almost nice enough it was difficult to imagine why others might have been afraid of her. But still, he'd heard a great deal about Ozai's daughter that supported the reasons people would be afraid of her. But maybe people changed - especially young ones who had been influenced solely by people like Ozai. It seemed likely to him that suddenly having decent role models might change the way she treated people in general.

Blink. Okay, now that was sad. Didn't know what enjoying something felt like? He frowned for a moment before it faded, back under his control and back into a more neutral expression. "Finding it calming is a good reason to keep doing it, I suppose." He reasoned. There wasn't time to dwell on it further or say anything else, because the Princess apparently had spotted something she wanted to show him.

That was well enough.

"They really are lovely," Takeshi admitted, admiring the plants from a distance for a moment before delicately reaching out to get a feel for the leaves. He was careful, not wanting to accidentally break them or tear the delicate petals. "I can see why you like them."
