Mai stands around 5' 5", relatively short, but she has a very slender, almost willowy build. Her black hair's generally held up in buns on either side of her crown, with loose bits falling over either shoulder. She has short bangs that come down to just below her eyebrows.
Mai isn't one for makeup, and tends to have a serious, or very bored look on her face.
Born in the Fire Nation, the only child of her parents, Ukano and Michi, for thirteen years. Her parents were strict, and required she remain silent and behave perfectly well, but they did give her whatever she wanted, as long as she behaved. Due to her privilege in the Fire Nation, she later attended the Royal Fire Academy for Girls, where she met and befriended Ty Lee and Azula, partly at the behest of her parents. She also developed a crush on Zuko at this time, much to Azula's amusement, as she took great joy in teasing the both of them for their mutual romantic interest in each other.
Due to extreme levels of boredom as a child, she started to throw knives at her wall, which eventually led to her developing skill in throwing knives and using them as a weapon. Prior to joining Azula on her quest to battle the Avatar, she was living in the recently-conquered Omashu, which had been renamed to New Ozai, and her father appointed governor of. Her parents had a little boy, Tom-Tom, recently as well. Azula swooped in and recruited Mai to her cause, and given her intense boredom, Mai was quick to accept the princess's proposition, as tracking down Zuko and Iroh, and the Avatar, sounded far more interesting.
Throughout the following months, Mai, Azula, and Ty Lee tracked Aang and his friends, trading blows with them on more than one occasion, and eventually, Zuko as well. They were, as well, part of the attempt to drill through the walls of Ba Sing Se, and flatly refused to enter the slurry pipeline, regardless of how threatening over it Azula tried to be. Whether or not Mai's ever really been afraid of Azula is somewhat in the air, but by most accounts, she certainly hasn't ever seemed to be.
Together, Mai, Ty Lee, and Azula attacked Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors, donning their uniforms to gain access to Ba Sing Se. They discussed their Fire Nation origins in the open on purpose, hoping the Dai Li would be spying on them and relay the message to Long Feng. She was set to watch the Earth King's pet bear, Bosco, during the coup, but didn't care enough about it to attempt to stop Sokka, Toph, and Kuei from taking him.
Incidentally, Zuko decided to return home after the fall of Ba Sing Se. Mai was a little less gloomy than usual about it. Once they arrived back to the Fire Nation, the teens went on a trip to Ember Island, and Mai and Zuko\'s relationship got a little rocky. Zuko became increasingly short-tempered and tactless around her, and became overly protective of her when Ruon-Jian took interest in her. Eventually, he got into an argument with Ruon-Jian, and then shoved him across a room, breaking a vase. Mai said Zuko was being impatient, hot-headed, and angry, and Zuko responded she has no passion for anything and is a big blah. Mai softly, yet harshly, replied that their relationship was over. The four later shared their life stories around a fire, and it was probably the first time they\'d really come to understand each other. She and Zuko made up shortly after this.
While their relationship did much better in the weeks after, Zuko was unhappy with how things were going in general, as he felt like he wasn\'t being himself. She was deeply upset when Zuko chose to leave the Fire Nation to travel with the Avatar, believing he was betraying his nation, but, despite this mindset, when they were reunited by happenstance at the Boiling Rock, Mai betrayed Azula to save Zuko and his friends. She told Princess Azula that her love for Zuko was greater than her fear of Azula. Ty Lee came to her rescue, chi blocking Azula before she could shoot, and quite probably kill, Mai with lightning, and the two were imprisoned for their betrayal.
Once Zuko was crowned Fire Lord, however, Mai and Ty Lee were released, and Mai reconciled and restarted her relationship with Zuko. She made peace with Team Avatar, as well. More recently, she has spent a lot of time away from the Fire Nation helping her parents relocate from Omashu back to the Fire Nation proper.
In the interim, it seems Toph, whom Mai calls the blind bat, has come to stay in the palace, and often come across one another now that Mai has returned. The two have never come to blows, but Toph's dislike of her is about as obvious to her as her own dislike of Toph is. They keep their heads on straight around each other merely out of disinterest in giving Zuko more drama to deal with.
